Spring and Summer months are the perfect time to switch up your makeup routine and try something different! The sun is shining, the birds are chirping and our ghostly halos are replaced with a healthy glow, which means we can get away with wearing less makeup! While the quantity is minimal, by no means do we have to sacrifice impact. In this case, less can definitely mean more! To get away with less makeup choose fuss-free products you trust! Opt for waterproof, smudge-proof products; makeup you know can withstand time and temperature. Lastly, try adding some colour to your routine! Colour is a sure way to add impact while staying minimal. Think of colour in your makeup as a statement accessory. When done properly as the focal point, a bright lip or colourful smokey eye adds visual interest while maintaining an understated, chic appearance.
These two looks use the same products (with the exception of the lip) taking you from day to night in 3 steps and 5 minutes!
Base: Chanel Vita Lumiere Aqua Foundation: this water based foundation is extremely lightweight, feeling comfortable and hydrating on the skin.
Concealer: NARS Creamy Concealer: concealing under the eyes is SUPER important when using colour on the eyes! Especially when using purples on the eyes, any blue/red tones under the eyes will only be enhanced.
Blush: Stila cream blush in Peony
Bronzer: NARS Laguna
Stila Lips and Cheek stain in Acai Crush: Stains are a great long-wear option! Often a gel-like or watery texture, stains sink into the lips leaving only a hint of colour.
Eyes (only 2 products!!):
Base: Shiseido shimmering cream eye colour in RS 318: Apply this all over the lid and a little under the eyes for a soft, smoked out look. These cream shadows are extremely easy to work with and they last for hours!
Liner: MAC Prunella: I used this for soft definition on my upper lid and lower waterline, which is the inner rim of the eye. Using a purple liner is a great alternative to black, giving a softer finish.
Step 1: Deepen the Eye Colour
To deepen the colour I used another cream shadow by Shiseido in the same tone as the first, but slightly darker. I took RS 321, placing it on the outer corner of my lid, in my crease and under my lower lashes. Using your finger or a fluffy eye brush, like a MAC 217 (one of my favourites), blend out the colour until there are no lines and it becomes smokey.
Step 2: Eye liner
Using the same eyeliner as in the day look, MAC's Prunella, I applied another layer on my upper lash-line and coloured in-between my bottom lashes for extra definition (leaving my waterline blank).
*Tip: placing colour under your lashes and leaving your waterline clean gives eyes a larger appearance!
Step 3: Lips
With a more intense eye it is always best to keep a neutral lip and vice versa. You don't want your features competing for attention! I used NARS Cruising (one of my personal favourites), a pink-toned neutral to compliment the cranberry tones on my eyes.
Optional Step 4: Lashes
Adding lashes is always optional, but I find they truly enhance a look in a way makeup cannot. At the very least they are just a fun addition to any look! I added very few individual lashes (between 5-6) on each eye for some extra length and definition.
Cream shadows are an extremely time efficient product. Creams come in an array of colours and finishes from natural skin-tones to sparkly black and anything in-between. You can apply them with your finger or a brush and have a complete eye look in under 2 minutes. Playing with the same colours that differ in value (light and dark) is an easy way to spruce up your eye makeup and go from day to night with no guess work. You can try this look in ANY colour, even neutrals! Experiment, have fun and find what works for you!
